First Peoples Child & Family Review
A Journal on Innovation and Best Practices in
Aboriginal Child Welfare
Administration, Research, Policy and Practice
Draft mission statement
First Nations have always produced knowledge about their communities and their cultures. Knowledge creation is a cultural activity and First Nations child welfare agencies and organizations in Canada contribute daily to the creation of contemporary cultural knowledge through the delivery of community-driven services, administrative decisions, policies and research activities. Indeed, there are many innovative initiatives, research projects and best practices currently operating throughout the Aboriginal child welfare field and the "First Peoples Child & Family Review" Journal can assist in bringing these Aboriginal accomplishments to the forefront. This new online journal will be an important step toward ensuring that the knowledge generated by Aboriginal child welfare agencies and like-minded organizations is respectfully shared and showcased by offering an alternative forum in which to publish and give voice to the best practices taking place in Aboriginal communities and child welfare agencies in Canada.
The "First Peoples Child & Family Review" Journal seeks to improve research, practice and public policy in the First Nations child welfare field in Canada by generating research, providing insight and sparking dialogue which contributes to strengthening the quality of research generated and produced by First Nations child welfare agencies, researchers, communities, citizens, institutions and other child welfare related organizations who work interdependently with and for First Nations agencies and organizations. The "First Peoples Child & Family Review" Journal is the first e-journal devoted exclusively to issues and practices in the field of child welfare and Aboriginal people's communities in Canada and around the world. The "First Peoples Child & Family Review" Journal will offer articles that are of interest to those who teach as well as pertinent to those who work in or with Aboriginal practitioners in the Aboriginal child welfare field.
We are proud to boast that our editorial board is comprised primarily of Aboriginal scholars and Aboriginal child welfare practitioners however we also recognize the importance of including non-Aboriginal members on our board. All our non-Aboriginal members are familiar with and respect the diverse worldviews of Aboriginal peoples and have demonstrated long-term commitment to supporting Aboriginal children, families and communities as well as Aboriginal child and family service agencies either through employment, teaching and research or by way of assisting through advocacy and policy development.
