The Sub Group on Indigenous Children and Youth was formally established on October 24, 2005 at Native Child and Family Services in Toronto. The sub group reports to the NGO Group on the Convention on the Rights to the Child and has as it's core mandate the collection of information on Indigenous child rights and working on International policy projects to support the recognition and implementation of rights for Indigenous children, youth and families.
The Sub Group is composed of four NGO Group Members and approximately 40 observer organizations which service Indigenous peoples on six continents.
The Indigenous Sub Group Final Workplan identifies the mandate, workplan for this year and membership for the group. Current efforts are focusing on the creation of an international literature review on Indigenous child rights including a survey of existing treaty body instrument observations and Indigenous customary law. The sub group is also providing some support to facilitate the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child developing a General Comment respecting Indigenous Children.
