The House of Commons Standing Committee on Public Accounts has issued a report expressing significant concerns about the slow progress of the Department of Indian Affairs (INAC) in clearly responding to the recommendations made by the Auditor General of Canada in her May 2008 report on First Nations child welfare funding. The Standing Committee was particularly concerned that INAC had not ensured that all First Nations children across Canada receive equitable child welfare funding. The United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child releases a General Comment on Indigenous Child Rights on January 30, 2009

This important document provides guidance to States Parties on how to interpret the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child for Indigenous children. It was developed by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child in consultation with the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues and the Working Group on Indigenous Child Rights, NGO Group.

The Canadian Human Rights Commission has officially called for an inquiry into whether federal government under funding of child welfare services on reserves amounts to discrimination under the Canadian Human Rights Act. Read more here
